Prom Makeup Tips

Prom is one of the hottest times of the entire year. Not only is this memory breeding day, a chance for you to naturally create some of the best memories to last a lifetime, but prom creates a chance for you to take risks. Including risks with your make-up. Now that you have bought your dress, it is extremely important to decide how you want to do your make-up. There is no rule that says you must wear a certain shade or color, let alone a certain make-up look. In fact, whether you want to go dramatic and glamorous versus natural and subtle is entirely up to you. It is how you apply your make-up and the individual products you use, along the way.

DO always apply primer. Whether underneath your foundation, eyeshadow, lips, or lashes...primer is an essential make-up product that prevents make-up from fading or smearing. You can find a primer within any make-up brand, however; it is important to look for reviews and individual testimonials on primers within individual beauty brands. Some of the best foundation primers include: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch Primer, and MAC's Prep + Prime Skin Primer. For eyeshadow and eyeliner, I truly recommend Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. For lips, I heavily recommend Laura Geller's Lip Spackle Primer. Mascara's usually come with a primer, however; you can find one within almost any beauty brand. One of the best is Anna Sui's Mascara Primer. If you don't want your make-up to come off and make a mess, simply apply a primer before applying your make-up.

DO NOT use a concealer the same shade as your foundation. Of course, never use a concealer that is darker than your foundation, however; it's important to not use one that is the same color, as well. This is one of the biggest make-up fallacies I have ever heard. It is important to use a concealer that is a shade lighter, as this will look better when it is matted with a powder. If you use a shade that is the same color as your foundation, it will appear that you have dark faux spots. You can prevent these dark faux spots by using concealer that is a shade lighter.

DO apply loose powder under the eyes, before applying eyeshadow. Whether you use a pigment or a mineral compact of eyeshadow, it is important to apply heavy amounts of powder under the eyes. Why? Because as you apply the eyeshadow, you will get a lot of fallout. Applying the powder under the eye will create a shield base, that absorbs any fallout that may occur after you have applied your eyeshadow. Any powder will do, however; it's best to use a powder that is generally your shade.

DO NOT apply sunless tanning. The last thing you want is your gorgeous white dress ruined by your sunless tanning product. Mystic tan is an option, however; it's best to use high SPF and take sometime to tan at a salon. Perhaps you can do what is referred to as a cocktail, where you tan in a booth or bed and apply mystic tan on top as a base. If you don't achieve that glow you want, in time for the special day, apply a bronzer. The bronzer will give you subtle color, as well as, glow that will allow you to achieve a look that is truly natural.

DO apply a luminizer all over your skin. Not just your face, but shoulders, neck, cleavage, and even legs. Some people often mistake a luminizer for a bronzer, however; although a bronzer can be considered a luminizer, both are entirely different products. Whether liquid or powder, this product creates a glow, more so than color. Whether gold or sun-kissed, bronze or champagne, a luminizer comes in an array of different colors and shades, making it essentially important for prom. A great luminizer is MAC's beauty powder/loose.

DO NOT use white eyeliner on the waterline, if you are looking for your eyes to "pop" without being dramatic. I notice some girls use a white shade of liner on their waterline and assume that it gives an illusion of making the eyes stand out. The reality is, it doesn't work. If you want to achieve this effect, simply find a liner (whether eye or lip) that is a shade lighter than the color on your waterline. This will blend in your eyes and make your eyes stand out, without the faux look. Not only will this look natural, but will give you an even bigger illusion of possessing that "pop" look.

DO tilt your head back a little, when applying mascara. The last thing you want to do is catch the wand within the skin, underneath the top waterline. This creates more than just a mess, but it makes the lashes appear sloppy and awkward. If you have applied your primer on your lashes prior, you will just have to start from the beginning. It is incredibly important to tilt your head back just a little, when applying mascara, as this will prevent you from making a mess.

DO NOT use a mascara that has a small wand. I have tried so many mascaras and one thing I have noticed is, the smaller the brush or wand, the lack of depth my lashes have. I find that using mascaras with a bigger wand or brush, give me more depth. Most of the smaller brushes or wands are in mascaras that possess the comb-like brush, rather than bristles that are slim. I have friends who have also noticed the same thing. People believe that using a small wand or brush prevents the use of product, while allowing you to achieve dramatic lashes, but that is not true. A great mascara that has a big wand and brush is Diorshow Mascara.

DO use lipstick and lip gloss together. Don't use either or, as either or just may never be enough. Whether matte, shimmery, or glossy, it is important to have color on your mouth. If you have on foundation, blush, bronzer, eyeshadow, as well as, mascara and no lip product, you will look a little "off". It is important to choose a shade based on what you like and what looks good on you. You can test some shades and decide. Most individuals tend to go for the nudes, neutrals, pinks, and peaches this time of year rather than the reds, burgundies, and darker, yet more dramatic colors, however; this is entirely up to you. Apply a lip primer, followed by a lipstick and a gloss.

DO NOT pick a feature and play it up. It is prom, not a print ad. You want to balance your entire look, not play up one individual feature. If you have full lips, you can emphasize, without taking the attention away from your exotic eyes and flawless skin. I have read so many prom make-up tips articles on and off the world wide web, that say you must play up one feature. That is very wrong. Wrong! If you do believe in playing up just one feature, you will attract attention for all of the wrong reasons.

DO NOT line the lips with dark lip liner. Whether black or brown, the use of such is a huge no-no. In fact, if you read make-up beauty don'ts in just about any book or article, you will notice that this is on the list. Lips look their best when they are lined simple, with just a hint of color, which is just a shade darker than their original product. Using a black liner before apply pink matte lipstick followed by a gloss is a no-no and just will not work. So ladies, please, do use a liner that is just a shade darker than your lipstick or gloss.

DO slightly pull on the lid, when applying liquid liner using a wand or pen. It is important to never pull the lid up, but to rather, pull the lid down. This will allow you to achieve a fine line, without making the line look sloppy or un-even. You can always re-apply, so take your time.

DO use nail polish. Whether you have long fingernails, short fingernails, or none, nail polish is a necessity that makes you look accessorized, without going all out. If you one who rarely uses nail polish, simply use a clear shade on your nails. If you want something simple, you just can't go wrong with a french manicure. If you want something extreme, go red or even use designs on your nails. I call these sub-accessories. Although, you may be wearing rings and other jewelry, it is always good to have a polished nail.

DO NOT be afraid to experiment. Creating a theme is essential, as this will help you come up with a satisfying, yet intriguing make-up look. However; if you want to be spontaneous, that is entirely up to you. A popular inspired look is the Marilyn Monroe timeless smokey look, however; you can do something more modern and dramatic, yet current and subtle. I will be honest, it is so much better to create a theme or something that goes with your entire look, rather than something that is popular or seems cool. The key is finding something that is "you"and that is what is most important.

Good Luck!

Do-It-Yourself Formal Hairstyles For Your Prom Night

For one night only, you have the opportunity to look your best, as you break free and have fun. Prom night is more than just a memory fueling day, that builds memories that will be embraced forever. It is a part of life and a part of the high school experience. There is absolutely no trick on the planet that can create such a beautiful, yet authentic look, such as beautiful hair. The best part is, you don't have to spend a cent to look like a million bucks. So, save your money, as looking like a million bucks is much easier with these special, do-it-yourself formal hairstyles for prom night.

One of the most popular hairstyles on the planet is the sleek, yet very chic pony tail. Whether straight, wavy, or curly; this modern yet timeless style is one of the easiest styles to create. The key in creating this amazingly universal hairstyle is allowing it to look polished and presentable, while making a statement, as a result. If you are someone with wavy or curly hair and you want to go with the straight, yet sleek appearance, you want to straighten your entire hair with a hair straightener. If you do not have a straightener, you can also use a hot iron. It is important to try and straighten as much as you can. If you can't get it all straightened, apply a straightener gel or mousse all throughout your hair. A great straightening serum is Got2B So Smooth Creme straightener.

THE SLEEK PONYTAIL

As soon as you are done straightening your hair, you want to find a hair tye. Something that is more on a rubber band wavelength than a scrunchy wavelength. Depending on how high you want the ponytail, it is best to start this incredibly unique style from the middle. You can determine the middle by finding the top of your earlobe and working your way in to the center. Once you have found the right to spot, place the tie around the hair. Once you have managed to create the ponytail, you then want to use a gel based hair holder that will allow your hair to stay, leaving absolutely no fallout. There are so many products on the market today, that there isn't just one that exceeds the other. A great mousse is Marc Anthony's Pro Style Styling mousse. Apply the mouse generously all around the best of your head. It is important to apply generous amounts to where you are more prone to fallout.

After you have finished applying mousse, you want to add more straightener gel to the actual ponytail, rather than the base. As soon as you are done, you want to apply a frizz serum to the ponytail and the base. A great frizz serum base is Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum. You don't want to use a lot, as it is a lot like what olive oil is to pasta, so only a drop or so will do. You should have a rather sleek, yet chic appearance of healthy hair in a ponytail. However; the only thing missing is the sheen base. When you look at those beautiful women on commercials with such sleek hair, you have to know they do not have that gorgeous hair, without some sort of product. Well, one of the biggest products they use is a sheen. You want to apply a hair sheen generously to your hair, allowing the hair to possess a healthy glow. The sheen usually works best as a spray. It is important to spray moderately, as too much will make hair appear oily and unkempt.

If you decide at the last minute that the straight look is not for you, simply curl your hair regularly with a base iron or standard curling iron. Depending on the actual curl size, you would want your base to be at least 1/4 of an inch to start. After you have done curling your hair, apply a curl promoting product to your hair. Avon's Mark. has a product called Curl Goddess that allows you to do this. Apply the product generously to the ponytail only. Once you have accomplished this, use a strong hold hairspray, that possesses a hold stronger than the average spray. Spray your entire head, but don't over spray, as this will weigh down the curl and make your hair look hard on the ends.

NATURAL FALL-DOWN

One of the most popular looks is a rather natural look, that represents you. If you are one who is notorious of wearing your hair up, you will enjoy this look, as this will prove to bring out your natural, yet sensual style. After all, this is what the natural fall-down is all about. One may admire this amazingly fluent hairstyle for it's ability to be natural, while providing sultry look, however; one can appreciate it much more so for it's simplicity. The key to creating the natural fall-down is allowing your hair to break free, by maintaining a healthy appearance of chic volume and modern appeal. The best way to start the natural fall-down is to roll your hair in rollers. These rollers must be rather large. They must be no smaller than 1 inch and no larger than 3 inch. Applying these rollers after you have washed your hair work best, as this will allow you to fix your make-up and everything else before creating your actual hairstyle and overall look.

As you continue, you want to spray your hair with a anti-frizz agent, even if your hair is not frizzy. Some great frizz sprays include Jonathan Product Create Smooth Anti-Frizz Spray or Loreal's Smooth Intense Anti-Frizz Spray. It is important to spray the hair while wet, as this will create a natural shield on the follicle without weighing your hair down. Once you have accomplished this, it's time to dry your hair. Although, a standard over the head hairdryer works best, it is not required, as any hairdryer will do. It is important to dry your hair until you feel your head feel almost hot. Once you have dried your hair, take the rollers out. Use a comb (not a brush) and simply work through your hair. Do not create a part, as part of the natural fall-down is allowing your hair to move and go wherever it takes you. Once you have worked through your hair, spray your hair with a good hold hairspray that promotes volume. Do not over spray, as this will weigh your hair down and make it feel like bristly wire.

If you are looking for a style that is straighter, rather than wavy, you want to straighten your hair with a hair straightener or iron. Once you have completed the actual straightening process, you want to apply a straightening product to the hair. These products promote straight hair, rather than curly or wavy. A great straightening product would be Avon's Mark. Salon Straightening products. It's best to use a cream or gel, however; a spray works just as good. It is important to apply generous amounts, but moderately more so than modestly. You don't want to weigh your hair down or make it look unhealthy or unkempt. As you continue, you want to apply an anti-frizz agent such as Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum to the hair. You don't want to use generous amounts, as this will make hair oily and weigh it down. Once you have completed, apply a sheen to the hair and work through with a comb.

FALLOUT UP-DO

One of the things I love most about the fallout up-do hairstyle is the fact it is as universal and diverse as the individual that wears it. Whether straight, curled, or wavy, this amazingly versatile hairstyle makes more than just a statement. It defines, as well as, defies your entire prom presentation. Whether alone or with an accessory, this brilliant up-do gives you the opportunity to look polished and presentable. The best thing about this versatile hairstyle is that it doesn't take much time and allows you to get dressed and apply your make-up, without a worry in the world. Imagine that. If you have curly hair and you are looking for your hair to appear straight, this style is as easy as 1,2,3 as it is easy if you have straight hair and would love some curl.

If you are someone with curly hair and you want your hair straight, the key is straightening your hair with a hair straightener or hot iron. Take sometime getting your hair from underneath, as well as, on the top. It doesn't have to be perfect, but do your best. After you continue, it is best to apply a straightening promoting product on your hair. Some of the best straightening products are by Avon's Mark. as they work great and are extremely affordable. Whether a cream, gel, or spray base, the products work individually with unique benefits. The key is finding the product that works for your style and using it. It is important to not abuse the products, but apply generously, as this will be sublimely effective, rather than efficient. Once you have completed, simply apply an anti-frizz agent, along with a sheen and you are done with that part.

If you are someone with straight hair and you want it curly, the key is adding curl using an iron. Although curlers work, they are unnecessary for this as you don't need to curl your entire head of hair. It is important to use curling irons with a base no larger than 1 inch. After you have curled your hair, you want to add a curling agent to your hair. This promotes the curl, without weighing your hair down and making it look rather faux. It is best to use something that is on a spray wavelength rather than on a creme or gel wavelength, however; that is entirely up to you. Once you have applied this product, you want to add hairspray for it to hold.

Once you have prepared your hair, you now want to create the actual up-do part of the style. Whether with a Barrett or a hair pin, you need an accessory that holds your hair up. You can choose if you want the hair to be on top of your head or towards a middle length. As you decide, it is important to know what barrettes and pins you want to use. Try to find something that matches your hair color and if you cannot, find something that matches what you are going to wear. Once you have found the area you want to start the fallout up-do, simply create it. Add the barrettes and pins. Remember, this hairstyle is simple and far from perfect, so expect the fallout.

You can now pat yourself on the back and commend yourself for achieving the ultimate prom hairstyle. Congratulations and good luck!
